UPDATE AS OF 03-04-2010 per NJ.Com;
Authorities: Fatal fire in Pitman in February caused by careless smoking
By Jessica Beym
March 04, 2010, 11:53AM
The February fire that took the life of a Pitman woman who was living in her mother’s home on Wildwood Avenue was caused by careless smoking, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

Det. Ronald Koller who investigated the cause determined the fire originated on a chair in the living room. The fire pattern, the fact that cigarette butts were found in the home, and witness interviews led to the determination, said prosecutor’s office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld.

The early morning blaze, which killed 61-year-old Barbara Powell, started shortly after 4 a.m. on Feb. 3. Firefighters found Powell inside in a back bedroom and she was pulled out through a rear window, then taken to Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy found the cause of death was smoke inhalation.

Powell’s mother, Jane Esbjornson, 84, was rescued form the home and taken to Kennedy University Hospital, then later transferred to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
She was initially in critical condition but is now recovering, said Weisenfeld

The station was toned out and crews quickly arrived. Due to the live power line on the ground crews could not put water on the fire. Command decided to use the company's chemical truck which has purple K fire retardant on board. The foam was used in an attempt to control the fire and prevent it from spreading until the power was secured. Stations 29-5, 10-2 and 43-3 were added to the call for foam and man power. Once the power was secured crews were able to put water on the fire and a nearby trailer that the fire was starting to extend to. All companies were clear from the fire ground at 17:17.
