Lake Side Middle School, Millville City, Homeland Security Drill, June 25 2009 : Homeland Security Drill
Millville City, Cumberland County
Sharp st. Lakeside Middle School
June 25, 2009

A Homeland Security drill was held in the back parking lot of Millville’s Lakeside Middle School. The drill was sponsored by a state grant to have this area prepared for a disaster. The disaster included preparation for an explosion and how to handle hazardous material. This drill was part two of the grant. The first part took place late last year; it consisted of a sit down and discussion of what would happen in the case of a real disaster.
The scenario set for the disaster drill was, an individual on a bus noticed a man acting strange with a package. They got off at the next stop and called 911. While on the phone with the emergency operator, the bus exploded. Debris from the explosion hit a nearby truck carrying hazardous material, causing the area to become contaminated.
All of the volunteer “victims” of the explosion were dressed in blue baseball caps, for easy identification, and had their injuries written on the front of their shirts. The responders were in maroon baseball caps, and responded as they would if it were an actual disaster. The victims were filed off of the bus, and taken care of according to the injuries written on their shirts. There was an area set up for hazard decontamination, complete with a shower and hazmat suits for the men running them. The fire trucks had their hoses run, as they would if it were not a drill, to extinguish the fire from the explosion. The press was given green baseball caps and allowed to observe the drill from a close distance, since it was only a drill. All other observers were dressed in cream colored baseball caps.
There was a quite a large turnout from participating agencies in the surrounding area. The local responders represented were; Millville, Vineland and Bridgeton Police Departments, Millville Rescue Squad, Millville Public Works, Millville, Vineland, Bridgeton, Rosenhayn, and Laurel Lake Fire Departments, Millville and Vineland Office of Emergency Management, Underwood Memorial Hospital EMS, South Jersey Health Care Hospital, The Red Cross and Salvation Army.
The County was represented by the Cumberland County Department of Public Safety, Prosecutor’s Office, 911 Communication, Road Department, Office of Emergency Management, Sheriff’s Department and the Cumberland County Health Department. State Agencies represented were the NJ State Police, NJ OHSP and the NJ State Police Office of Emergency Management.
